The Internet is already an important tool, but in order to work as a democratic infrastructure, it has to be free and accessible for all. If we are better linked, there is a chance that we will speak with each other, coordinate our efforts and make decisions for the benefit of all of Greenland. We accept responsibility for those with whom we are connected. We need to include all of Greenland and the many Greenlanders who live around the world. We need a change of attitude, so that our sense of kinship will go beyond the local community.

We need a new democratic infrastructure that will neutralise the enormous geographic distances.

However, in everyday life, the sense of community stops at the town boundary. Identity is strong and pride is great when conversation turns to Greenland. We feel connected to one another and we take an interest in each other's lives – the so-called kamikpost still runs faster than the north wind and even in the smallest settlement, we are more online than most people. We are good at speaking with each other, telling stories, and looking after each other. Everybody knows each other the man in the street greets his mayor, and family ties remain of great significance. Greenlanders are few in number and they live in small communities. Can Greenland develop a new organisation form, adapted to the geographical, demographical and cultural conditions in the country? Critics indicate problems with over administration, poor coordination and an average period of employment of just 1.8 years in the central administration of the Self-Government. Almost 60 per cent of the labour force are employed in public administration or in publicly owned enterprises. Greenland has developed a copy of the Danish welfare state, establishing in the course of just a few decades the world's largest public sector – facilitated by annual financial subsidies from Denmark. Could the pillars of a future Greenland democracy be our strong tradition for close social relations combined with modern network technology? A new form of government is needed, which will be capable of mobilising all Greenlanders to collaborate and accept responsibility, regardless of where in the world they live. It is not adapted to the conditions of Greenland and over administration, and a loss of knowledge is part of the disorder of the day. Greenland has adopted a copy of the Danish welfare state.
